"The exhibition displays the contents of these steamer trunks, offering an intimate look into the lives, communities, and activism of the so-called Manong Generation."
"The goal is to have visitors not only see fragments of these migrants' lives but their full humanity as well, says Sam Vong, the exhibition's curator."
"The previous stories because they were farm workers have focused on them being economic subjects rather than people in all their complexities."
In 2005, 26 steamer trunks belonging to Filipino migrants were discovered in Stockton, California. These trunks contained personal items, including a pillowcase with the phrase HOW CAN YOU FORGET ME. This exhibition, titled How Can You Forget Me: Filipino American Stories, at the National Museum of American History, highlights the experiences of the Manong Generation, early Filipino laborers in the US. The exhibition aims to present their full humanity, moving beyond the economic narratives typically associated with their stories.
