Dozens of well-wishers gathered aboard the S.S. Red Oak Victory to celebrate the 100th birthdays of Jeanne Gibson and Marian Sousa. Guests popped sparkling wine, swapped stories, and heaped praise on the women while Sousa recovered from a back injury and missed the event. As teenagers during World War II, Sousa worked as a draftsman editing ship blueprints at the Richmond Kaiser Shipyard after taking an engineering drawing course at UC Berkeley, and Gibson worked as a riveter helping turn blueprints into ships. Both women are recognized among the Rosie the Riveter home-front workforce. Sousa left the shipyard after about a year of work.
