The Saga Farmann is a 20-metre modern replica of a year-998 Viking longship and has been touring around Europe. The replica is modest in size compared with Hollywood depictions but prioritises authenticity, illustrating how brave early sailors had to be. The ship sailed into London at 10pm, passing through Tower Bridge, and moored on the north side of the Thames next to London Bridge. On 27 August the ship will pass back through Tower Bridge at 4pm for a short row into St Katharine Docks. The vessel will be open to the public from the evening until Sunday morning (except Thursday between 3pm to 5pm) and will remain in the docks until 7 September, appearing as a star attraction at the Classic Boat Festival on 6–7 September alongside the Dunkirk Little Ships.
The 20-metre longship, the Saga Farmann, is a modern replica of an actual longship that dates back to the year 998, and has been on a round-Europe tour for the past couple of years. Don't expect a huge ship as per Hollywood imaginations, as this is a real replica, and rather modest in comparison, but authenticity is far better, and the small size if anything, makes the Vikings more admirable than ever, as it would be a brave person to set sail in the longship.
Last night at 10pm, the ship sailed into London, passing through Tower Bridge, and later moored on the north side of the Thames, next to London Bridge. Later today (27th August), the ship will head back out through Tower Bridge at 4pm for a short row into the neighbouring St Katherine Docks. The ship will then be open to the public from this evening until Sunday morning (except Thursday between 3pm to 5pm)
