Briefly

Zeppelins were rigid airships first built in Germany by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, with the first flight occurring in 1900. These airships gained popularity as passenger liners in peacetime and were also utilized during WWI for bombing raids. In the interwar period, transatlantic Zeppelins regularly transported passengers between Europe and cities like New York and Rio. However, the Hindenburg disaster in May 1937 led to a decline in the popularity of Zeppelin travel, which was eventually replaced by commercial airplanes after WWII.

Following the Hindenburg disaster of May 1937, when the LZ 129 Hindenburg's hydrogen gas cells caught fire and destroyed the airship, Zeppelin travel fell out of public favour.
