""The committee calls on Yale to reflect on and take responsibility for our role in the erosion of public trust. I accept this judgment fully. This decline did not come out of nowhere, nor did it happen overnight. And we were certainly more than mere bystanders.""
""Eliminating tuition would increase Yale's dependence on the federal government and on a limited number of large donors, raising the potential for additional problems of undue influence, suspicion, and mistrust.""
Yale University's president, Maurie McInnis, recognizes the institution's contribution to declining public trust in higher education. In response, she established the Committee on Trust in Higher Education to conduct a self-examination. The committee's report includes 20 recommendations, including increasing the income limit for tuition-free attendance. However, the committee opposed making Yale entirely tuition-free, citing concerns about dependence on federal funding and large donors, which could exacerbate mistrust.
