Yale has a plan after Trump nixed a key student-loan program
"Graduate and professional students could soon find themselves with more limited student-loan options. Yale has a plan. The Yale School of Public Health posted on LinkedIn last week that it will "soon introduce a replacement loan option" for student-loan borrowers who are affected by President Donald Trump's plan to eliminate the Grad PLUS program as part of his "big beautiful" spending legislation."
"Yale said that its new program would "offer comparable, if not more competitive, loan terms compared to previous Grad PLUS loans," adding that more details will be available soon. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Business Insider is covering the challenges, successes, and unique experiences of student loan borrowers. President Trump’s spending legislation eliminates the Grad PLUS program and imposes lifetime borrowing caps of $100,000 for graduate students and $200,000 for professional students. Yale plans to introduce a replacement loan option that it says will offer comparable or more competitive terms than previous Grad PLUS loans. Other universities, including Duke and the University of Pennsylvania, are developing financing options and exploring private-lender arrangements to fill gaps. Education policy experts warn that tighter borrowing limits could push some students to forgo advanced degrees or seek private loans with potentially riskier terms. The changes take effect in July 2026.
