Why Some Students Study 4-Plus Majors
""My adviser said that I could graduate a semester early or triple major,""
""I figured I'd want to be in college all four years, kind of the classic, standard route. So I figured I might as well push as much into that time frame as I could.""
Sophia Duran completed eight Advanced Placement courses and three dual-enrollment courses in high school, entering Syracuse University with more than a year of college credits. An adviser presented options to graduate early or pursue multiple majors. Duran, initially a double major in finance and business analytics, added entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises, then economics, becoming a quadruple major. About 10 percent of students from 2009 to 2019 earned double majors, and research links double majors to greater resilience in downturns. Data on students pursuing three, four, or more majors and their outcomes remains limited. Some students pursue multiple majors to strengthen résumés amid ROI concerns.
