Weber State Censors, Then Cancels, Censorship Conference
""Everything seemed to be going according to plan," Herrmann said."
""At that point, I said, 'We can't in good conscience present our research without using those terms, and you should remove our presentation instead,'" Herrmann told Inside Higher Ed."
""After careful consideration of concerns raised by conference planners and participants, we have determined we cannot in good conscience deliver the high-quality, meaningful experience that our community expects and deserves," they wrote."
""The irony reeks," the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression wrote in an X post."
The Unity Conference at Weber State University carried the theme "Redacted: Navigating the Complexities of Censorship." Associate professor Sarah Herrmann and a student prepared research on the impact of Utah's HB 261, which bans DEI practices in higher education, on student performance and persistence. Days before the event, a campus administrator directed removal of the terms "DEI," "diversity," "equity," and "inclusion" from submitted slides. Herrmann refused to present without those terms and requested removal of the presentation. Other faculty withdrew rather than self-censor, and organizers canceled the conference, citing inability to deliver a meaningful experience. The action drew criticism for its ironic nature.
