"Academic Integrity Concern,"
"And on top of that, I was getting emails from the academic misconduct board saying I needed to write out an explanation as to why I think this might have happened,"
"It was really difficult to then get into the field as a nurse because most places require you to have a grad year," Madeleine told the ABC. "I didn't know what to do. Do I go back and study? Do I just give up and do something that's not nursing in a hospital?"
"substantially overstated"
Australian Catholic University accused a nursing student, Madeleine, of using AI to cheat while she was on final-year placement and applying for graduate jobs. ACU sent an "Academic Integrity Concern" email and the academic misconduct board asked for a written explanation. The accusation remained unresolved for six months and her transcript was marked "results withheld," which contributed to missed graduate job offers. The university reported nearly 6,000 alleged cheating cases in 2024, with about 90 percent linked to AI. A deputy vice-chancellor called the numbers "substantially overstated" while acknowledging an uptick in referrals, and AI adoption in education is increasing disputes and eroding trust between professors and students.
