""The London University is at this time an object of serious and important consideration with all who think deeply respecting the spread of knowledge in the British empire. "The writer, though not sparing in his exposure of the abuses which prevail in our great national institutions at Oxford and Cambridge, clearly shows that the London University neither aims at becoming, nor ever can become, their rival.""
""That many men should remain hostile is what all must have expected; that numbers of women should remain indifferent is, considering their traditional surroundings and associations, a matter of surprise to none; but these facts remain true - that the noble resolution of the university was carried, not hurriedly nor with a doubtful victory; that it was the crowning act of a long contact and passed by a majority of 110 votes.""
University College London was founded in 1826 as the third university in the UK. Early commentary described the London University as a significant force for spreading knowledge across the British empire and noted it did not seek to rival Oxford and Cambridge. UCL became the first university open to applicants regardless of race, class or religious background. In 1878 UCL admitted women in all faculties except medicine, initially offering places to nine women including Eliza Orme. Emily Shirreff reported the resolution passed by a majority of 110 votes despite hostility and indifference. UCL rose in national rankings, overtaking Oxford in 2009 and ranking ninth in 2026.
