UC Berkeley shares 160 names with Trump administration in McCarthy era' move
"We have a right to know the charges against us, to know who has made the charges and to review them and defend ourselves. But none of that has happened, which is why we're in Kafka-land. It is an enormous breach of trust."
"We've been a place where controversial public issues can be freely debated. We have different views on Israel-Palestine. We need to hear them even when they upset us. That is the spirit of the place that I have been championing and affirming for 30 years. So it's a heartbreak and it's disgraceful."
UC Berkeley provided the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights with the names of 160 faculty, students and staff as part of an investigation into alleged antisemitic harassment and discrimination. University lawyers sent letters notifying affected community members that OCR requested comprehensive documents. Judith Butler, a Jewish scholar critical of Israel, received a letter and said university counsel provided no information on specific allegations. Butler said affected individuals have a right to know charges, accusers and to defend themselves, calling the disclosures a breach of trust. University officials confirmed the disclosure and framed it as compliance with an OCR investigation amid heightened federal scrutiny of campus activism.
