TUI to ballot for industrial action if Leaving Cert reform talks 'fail to deliver acceptable outcome'
Briefly

An emergency motion was passed unanimously at the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) annual conference in Co Wexford, echoing a similar decision by ASTI. The TUI criticized Education Minister Helen McEntee for moving forward with the accelerated senior cycle redevelopment amidst calls for pause and consultation. Following intense discussions that began on April 10, the TUI noted that tangible results were lacking. President David Waters highlighted potential for industrial action if negotiations fail, emphasizing the disparities in resources among schools and the urgency to adapt to changes set to affect Leaving Cert assessments by September.
Under the new plans, Leaving Cert students will be awarded more marks for project work and less for written exams, set to begin in September.
TUI president David Waters stated that unless tangible results are achieved from negotiations, the union may resort to strike action to defend standards.
