Black students at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) often feel the need to balance their identity with the surrounding environment. This experience can be challenging, but it also presents opportunities for personal growth. Building community is essential for thriving in these settings. Mentors and strong support systems provide crucial guidance, while participating in extracurricular activities fosters leadership and cultural enrichment. Developing self-advocacy skills and strategic approaches can create a more fulfilling college experience, helping students to blossom and navigate the complexities of PWIs successfully.
Mentors and champions provide sunlight to help opportunities grow and expand. Speaking up in class plants seeds of visibility and engagement with professors.
Extracurriculars are fertile ground where joy, leadership, and culture can flourish. Blooming at a PWI requires strong roots in strategy, self-advocacy, and support.
Navigating a predominantly white institution as a Black student requires a balance between identity and environment. This balance can be exhausting but should not hinder personal growth.
Community played a crucial role in my journey. Finding like-minded individuals fosters a supportive environment that enhances the educational experience in a PWI.
