State Higher Ed Officials Do Away With the Term "Noncredit"
""what a terrible term that is""
""There's not that many things in life that get described by what they're not," Denley said. "That term just didn't in any way seem to capture what these kinds of credentials are, what students gain by earning them.""
""They are getting opportunities that help them advance in their career," Klein said, "which is good not just for them as individuals but for the state, as well, and for our country.""
Louisiana replaced the term 'noncredit' with 'validated skills and learning' to better convey mastery of employer-valued competencies earned in short-term and workforce programs. Board members judged 'noncredit' as defining programs by what they are not and failing to capture credential value. Louisiana participates in the Noncredit Mobility Academy with representatives from five other states working to reframe noncredit offerings. SHEEO officials emphasize that focusing on gains rather than the absence of college credit highlights career advancement benefits for individuals, states, and the nation. Several states and institutions have adopted alternative labels such as 'validated skills and training' and 'skills training.'
