Overlooked Calif. university is the background for Steve Carell's new HBO show
"Steve Carell was having to do some almost acrobatic type of climbing around on a rooftop. So he was right outside our window, and they're having a wind machine, so wind's coming at him ... That was pretty entertaining to watch close up."
"One thing the three of us had in common was we all had daughters in their early 20s who were kind of burgeoning into adulthood and didn't need their fathers anymore, especially for three men that didn't mind being fairly intrusive in their lives and wanting to overprotect them."
HBO's new series 'Rooster' features Steve Carell as Greg Russo, a beach read author who becomes a visiting professor at the fictional Ludlow College to spend time with his daughter, an adjunct professor navigating a difficult breakup. The show was filmed almost entirely at University of the Pacific's campus over two weeks in June 2025, including a memorable scene where Carell's character climbs a building to steal a weathervane. Created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the series explores themes of fatherhood and overprotection. The cast includes Charly Clive, Phil Dunster, Danielle Deadwyler, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai.
