€28.5 million will fund over 1,100 additional third-level places for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other healthcare professions across colleges nationwide this year. The funding targets growth in clinical and allied health education to expand training capacity and address high applicant demand. The increase aims to reduce the number of students forced to seek education abroad due to limited domestic places. The announcement was made by Further and Higher Education Minister James Lawless on Monday. Universities and institutes will allocate the places to meet workforce needs and support long-term healthcare staffing. Implementation will occur this year.
