Ontario considering shortening length of teachers' college, documents suggest | CBC News
Briefly

Ontario's government is contemplating reducing the duration of teachers' college programs in response to a growing shortage of educators. Recent research indicates that lengthy initial teacher education (ITE) programs do not correlate with improved teaching effectiveness. Instead, the findings suggest that real classroom experience, particularly extended practicums, enhances teachers' preparedness and retention in the field. Following a reduction in admission rates since a shift to two-year programs in 2015, the Ministry of Education seeks solutions to ensure student success amidst this critical shortage.
"There is little evidence that the amount of course work in ITE (initial teacher education) makes a difference in teachers' effectiveness when they enter the profession."
"Literature research shows that teachers who complete longer practicums feel better prepared and are more likely to stay in the profession."
