"The decision for a vote of no confidence is not something anyone takes lightly. The faculty really regrets that it came to this. We have tried along the way to really encourage more open communication with leadership."
"The faculty voice is important, but, as a board, we will not agree to slowing down or stopping an initiative that requires adaptability, resilience and work. I encourage you and your colleagues to roll up your sleeves and be productive partners in both changing and shaping the future of a university that deserves nothing but the best."
Old Dominion University's Faculty Senate voted 41-7 to express no confidence in the university president, provost, and vice president following the announcement of the Forward-Focused Digital Transformation Initiative. This initiative would reduce some online courses from 16 weeks to 8 weeks while keeping tuition unchanged. Faculty members view this as a culmination of months of feeling excluded from decision-making and disrespected regarding shared governance. Senate chairman Corrin Allen emphasized that faculty attempted to encourage open communication with leadership before resorting to the no-confidence vote. The Board of Visitors, led by rector P. Murry Pitts, stated in December that it will not allow the initiative to fail, emphasizing the need for adaptability and resilience in response to changing circumstances.
