Presidents at historically Black colleges and universities serve an average of 4.22 years overall, with private HBCU presidents averaging 4.42 years and public HBCU presidents averaging four years. By comparison, college presidents overall have a 5.9-year average tenure. Stable and enduring presidential leadership is identified as essential for HBCU futures. Recommended measures to improve retention include training boards to enhance presidential search processes, strengthening onboarding, mentorship and succession planning for incoming presidents, and reexamining selection and support systems to retain visionary and innovative leaders.
