Vahid Abedini, a University of Oklahoma professor of Iranian Studies, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement while boarding a flight to the Middle East Studies Association conference in Washington, D.C. He holds an H-1B nonimmigrant work visa. Department of Homeland Security characterized the detention as standard questioning and reported his release Monday night. Colleagues and the MESA Board of Directors expressed alarm, calling the detention wrongful and describing deep concern. The detention intensified fears among foreign and American academics about travel to U.S. conferences and prompted calls for support and inquiries into the circumstances.
