Higher education perpetuates social and economic inequality through an educational caste system that elevates graduates of a few elite universities while limiting mobility for those without degrees. That inequality produces resentment and distrust of higher education, expertise, and institutions, contributing to political populism and a pervasive loss of faith in the system. Younger Americans experience growing isolation and interpersonal distrust. Elite institutions have a leading role and responsibility to address these structural failures and to help restore trust. A Harvard Radcliffe Institute initiative will confront threats to academic freedom and examine where colleges have fallen short of intellectual ideals.
