Harvard leaders salute National Security Fellows - Harvard Gazette
"We are very, very deeply connected with the military. Harvard students and alumni have served going back to King Philip's War, in 1675, before there was a United States. It's not only a reflection of the age of Harvard - it's a reflection of common values."
"It was one of the most meaningful experiences in my life. I treated veterans who served during wartime from World War II right up until I left in 2011, and their stories were remarkable. Stories of courage, stories of learning how to work together and what it meant to be part of a team."
Harvard's connection to the U.S. military is rooted in shared values and the service of students and alumni throughout history. President Alan Garber emphasized this bond during a reception for National Security Fellows, who are active-duty officers engaged in academic pursuits. Garber highlighted the significance of service to the country, reflecting on his experiences treating veterans and the remarkable stories of courage and teamwork he encountered. The National Security Fellowships program, established 42 years ago, continues to foster this relationship between academia and military service.
