""The quiet elimination of SSR adds to the growing list of barriers facing international students on U.S. campuses and will particularly affect those from refugee and displaced backgrounds.""
""International students enrich and contribute to our campuses and communities across the country, and we cannot allow this needed support for them to disappear without notice.""
The federal government plans to phase out Special Student Relief designations, which provide regulatory flexibility for international students from crisis-affected countries. These designations allow eligible F-1 visa students to bypass certain requirements, easing financial burdens from crises in their home countries. Since January 2025, 15 designations have expired without renewal, with the last one for Lebanon set to end on May 27. This elimination poses additional challenges for international students, particularly those from refugee backgrounds, who contribute significantly to U.S. campuses and communities.
