Colorado fined over fans' anti-Mormon chants
""Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," league commissioner Brett Yormark said Tuesday in a statement. "While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday's game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior." "We denounce all forms of religious discrimination & appreciate @CUBoulder's example in rooting out these inappropriate actions. We invite all to showcase their fandom with enthusiasm & respect.""
""That's not indicative of who we are," Sanders said. "Our student body, our kids are phenomenal. So don't indict us just based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously. "Maybe I shouldn't have said that as well, but the truth is going to make you free. But BYU, we love you. We appreciate you and we support you.""
The Big 12 fined Colorado $50,000 and issued a public reprimand after Buffaloes fans in the student section shouted derogatory anti-Mormon chants at BYU during the Boulder game, which BYU won 24-21. League commissioner Brett Yormark labeled the language hateful and discriminatory and said the conference maintains zero tolerance. Colorado coach Deion Sanders apologized on behalf of the athletic department, defended the broader student body, and expressed support for BYU. Colorado chancellor Justin Schwartz and athletic director Rick George called the behavior deeply disappointing and inconsistent with university values and said those responsible will be held accountable under the fan code of conduct.
