"I was like, 'Oh snap-I don't have to trek around Boston to find food from other local pantries,'"
"If I find myself going to class thinking about how I didn't go grocery shopping this weekend, I know I can pick up something from the Rox Box,"
"That lets me be more present in class ... [and] really does allow peace of mind,"
Roxbury Community College launched the Rox Box in October 2023 as a community-funded campus pantry designed to mirror a neighborhood grocery store, stocking food, diapers, and personal-care essentials. More than 1,500 students have relied on the pantry since its launch, with each student receiving 30 points monthly to redeem for needed items. The pantry reduces travel to off-campus resources and helps students focus on classes while balancing responsibilities such as parenting. Nearly 60 percent of college students experienced basic-needs insecurity in the past year, and campus pantry visits have risen 30–50 percent across national partners.
