Cistercian College in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, established in 1905 as a boys-only school, will now welcome girls as part of its move to co-education. This significant decision is intended to promote gender equality and meet societal changes, enabling families to send multiple children of different genders to the same institution. Cistercian College has also been noted for its strong emphasis on sports, with new initiatives aimed at providing equal academic and extracurricular opportunities for both boys and girls. However, high fees for boarding options may still limit access for some families.
The Cistercian Order and school as a whole feel we should extend to girls and the whole family. This reflects society and workplaces.
It's great to see the Cistercian Order, our patrons, are fully behind the move as well.
We want to cater for entire families, for boys and girls, for sisters to attend the same as their brothers.
We wanted to move to become more equal. We have open days and when we couldn't offer the same place to half of the room, it's a disappointment to girls.
