"Any type of attempt on my end to censor or manipulate any content from a student media outlet is literally against the law, Rodenbush told IDS staff during their Oct. 9 meeting. This is First Amendment stuff."
"If the abrupt ousting of the student media director was related to his refusal to participate in such censorship, the message is clear: IU no longer welcomes a free student press. The Media School must reverse course immediately, before more damage is done to its reputation and to its students' rights."
"CENSORED. This is not about print. This is about a breach of editorial independence."
Jim Rodenbush, director of student media since 2018, was fired by the Media School dean, who cited a lack of leadership and misalignment with university direction. Rodenbush said he had been pressured since August to stop student publication of news and refused to participate in censorship, citing legal and First Amendment concerns. Student editors accused the university of infringing editorial independence and unlawful censorship, quoting the Student Press Law Center and demanding reversal. The university then prohibited the planned print edition and limited future publication to online; students published a digital edition headlined "CENSORED."
