"We celebrate each of these institutions, particularly their dedication to partnering with their neighbors-fostering civic engagement, building useable knowledge, and catalyzing real world learning experiences for students,"
"This recognition means a great deal to the University of Houston, because it reflects who we are, and how we prepare educated, engaged citizens, while showing up for our community every day,"
More than 230 colleges and universities received the Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education in 2026. A total of 237 institutions were recognized, including 48 receiving the classification for the first time. The cohort includes 157 public colleges and universities, 80 private institutions, and 81 minority-serving institutions. The designation recognizes sustained community partnerships, civic engagement, creation of usable knowledge, and real-world learning experiences for students. Some institutions celebrated the recognition, and the University of San Diego will house the Community Engagement classification for the next two cycles.
