Canada's Visa Requirements Are Forcing Students in Gaza to Put Dreams on Hold
"There are bombings around us. There is no internet access, no electricity. The basic necessities are not available. We are struggling to live. Khaled described the hardships of living in a tent with his wife and their 3-year-old daughter in Deir al-Balah, highlighting the severe conditions faced by displaced Palestinians despite the ceasefire."
"University officials said the graduation reflects the continuation of academic programs despite repeated damage to infrastructure and limited resources, as graduates prepare to enter the healthcare sector in a territory facing severe medical shortages. This statement demonstrates efforts to maintain educational continuity in Gaza while acknowledging the significant challenges posed by infrastructure damage and resource limitations."
Khaled and Raneen, a Palestinian couple from northern Gaza, have been displaced over 10 times since 2023 and currently live in a tent with their young daughter in Deir al-Balah. Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in October, they face ongoing hardships including military drone presence, bombings, lack of electricity and internet, and severe resource scarcity. Both have been accepted to Western University in Ontario—Raneen for a nursing Ph.D. program and Khaled for a cardiology research fellowship. However, the Israeli blockade on Gaza and restrictions on freedom of movement prevent them from leaving to complete visa applications and begin their studies, forcing them to defer their academic pursuits.
