ASTI votes down Leaving Cert reform package
Briefly

The ASTI voted against a package aimed at improving teachers' conditions of employment and supporting the Senior Cycle Redevelopment Programme, despite a strong proposal from the Education Department. Industrial action may occur, as teachers express concerns over implementation amid resource shortages. The program's aim is to enhance students' skills and prepare them for future demands.
The package related to teachers and their conditions of employment apply only to those teachers who become parties to the agreement.
ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie highlighted that a key concern is the lack of resources and capacity in schools to introduce such radical change effectively.
Education Minister Helen McEntee expressed disappointment that ASTI members have voted against a strong package of supports for teachers, schools, and students.
Minister McEntee emphasized the Senior Cycle Redevelopment program's motivation is to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a changing world.
