Army Preserves ROTC Units Previously Slated to Close
"Cuts to civilian employees this summer threatened Reserve Officer Training Corps programs at dozens of colleges and universities, as well as the academic prospects of students at those institutions. This summer, the Army announced the closure of 10 host programs and nine extension campuses in an effort to realign units and the workforce. The changes were slated to take place at the end of this academic year."
"The one institution that will not continue its ROTC program is St. Augustine's University in North Carolina, due to an inability to maintain its accreditation status, according to Delongchamp. ROTC offers participating college students full-tuition scholarships at the partner institution, as well as monthly stipends for living and housing expenses, in exchange for a future service commitment in most cases."
Nine affected colleges will continue Army ROTC support by operating as extension units in partnership with nearby institutions, allowing cadets to remain enrolled without transferring. The Army had announced closures of 10 host programs and nine extension campuses to realign units and the workforce after a 12 percent reduction in the civilian workforce tied to a deferred resignation offering. One institution, St. Augustine's University, will lose its ROTC program due to accreditation problems. ROTC provides full-tuition scholarships and monthly stipends to participating students in exchange for future service commitments. Community feedback and program review influenced the decision to keep programs open.
