Teachers reportedly asked him to revise earlier versions because they were not positive enough. On graduation day, he was told he would not be allowed to speak. He then delivered a different message calling the school built on racism, sexism, and homophobia and encouraging students to stand up for themselves even if it causes disruption. Afterward, he received support from many people, and the clip circulated widely online.
"He'd prepared a speech about acceptance and personal hardship, including the trauma of losing both his parents to cancer. "My parents are dead, and I feel like people need to know that the trauma that you face... doesn't have to shape you," Daniel told WAVE News. But Mattingly says teachers told him earlier versions of the speech weren't "positive enough," leading him to revise it multiple times."
"Then, on the morning of graduation, he was informed he would no longer be allowed to speak at all. Instead of delivering his prepared remarks, Mattingly walked onto the stage and gave an entirely different speech: "This school is built on racism, sexism and homophobia. I encourage everyone here today to stand up for themselves even if it makes a scene.""
"Mattingly later said that despite concerns about causing controversy, he ultimately decided to "speak from my heart." He felt staying quiet would have gone against what he truly wanted to say. After the ceremony, Daniel said many people approached him with support. A clip from the speech was shared online by his uncle and quickly circulated on social media."
"Daniel also clarified that he never intended to make the school look bad, but that he just wanted to be honest about his own experience as a student. When asked about the growing attention, Daniel said "I'm on the news. So I'm like... it got where it needed to be.""
