The HSE nurse sponsorship programme provides 30 places for healthcare support staff to undertake a four-year degree to qualify as nurses or midwives. Ian Healy, 45, has worked at Tallaght University Hospital for over 26 years across the operating theatre, emergency department and endoscopy unit and will study nursing at Trinity College Dublin, intending to return to TUH with an interest in ICU. Gillian Kelly, 38, has been a healthcare assistant on Franks Ward for three years, values busy orthopaedic care and patient interaction, and will also begin the nursing degree.
