Prisons routinely ignore guidelines on dying inmates' end-of-life choices
Briefly

Brian Rigsby, a 46-year-old inmate with untreated hepatitis C causing liver failure, chose to decline life-saving treatment shortly after being hospitalized from prison. His mother, Pamela Moser, attempted to secure a medical furlough for hospice care but time was short. Upon his transition to palliative care, prison health staff informed the hospital of a payment cessation, leading to Rigsby's transfer back to jail where he later died. Moser, a former hospice nurse, is left uncertain about her son's final days and suffering.
Moser never saw or spoke to her son again. The last day I went to see him in the hospital, I was hoping he would take his last breath, said Moser, a former hospice nurse.
After learning that Rigsby was on palliative care, the staff at YesCare...told the hospital it would stop paying for his stay and then transferred him back to Staton Correctional Facility.
