Paddy Kavanagh was welcomed back to County Hall after a lengthy absence caused by illness. He had undergone triple heart bypass surgery and spent three weeks convalescing at home following his procedure. At the May meeting of Wexford County Council, Cathaoirleach Joe Sullivan said he had been sorely missed, and councillors and the press applauded his return. Kavanagh paid tribute to the staff at Beacon Hospital, describing them as incredible and noting the presence of 17 different nationalities among the caregivers. He said the health service would be in a sorry state without foreign nationals. He also said hospital staff identified the cause of his illness during surgery, stating his heart was too big and that he had been buying too many drinks for people.
"Gorey councillor Paddy Kavanagh has been welcomed back to County Hall following a lengthy absence due to illness. The Wexford Independent Alliance (WIA) councillor underwent triple heart bypass surgery last year and was absent from meetings while he convalesced at home. However, at the May meeting of Wexford County Council (WCC) he was welcomed back into the fold by Cathaoirleach Joe Sullivan who said Cllr Kavanagh had been "sorely missed"."
"Following a round of applause from the councillors and gathered press, Cllr Kavanagh paid tribute to staff at the Beacon Hospital who had cared for him during his three-week stay. "It was a trying time, but the staff were incredible," he said. "There were 17 different nationalities among them during the three weeks I was in there. Without foreign nationals the health service in this country would be in a sorry state.""
"And while the surgery was a success, Cllr Kavanagh said staff at the hospital had discovered the true cause of his illness while he was under the knife. "They found out what was wrong, they said my heart was too big; I was buying too many drinks for people," he noted."
