California's SB 963, signed by Governor Newsom, mandates that emergency room staff screen for domestic abuse and human trafficking signs. This initiative aims to help victims by connecting them to social services or law enforcement. Expert Sandie Morgan emphasizes that healthcare workers often serve as the first point of contact for victims, making their role critical. Although the law may not solve the larger issues, it has the potential to create significant change in how victims are supported in emergency care settings.
Health care workers are the first line, the first people who victims are likely to encounter, and certainly the first they're more likely to trust.
This (law) is important... I don't think it'll do anything magical, in terms of solving the problem, but it has the potential to help people.
