The UK government has announced a £102 million funding initiative aimed at expanding and modernizing over 1,000 GP surgeries. This investment represents the largest public funding for healthcare facilities in five years and is a part of broader efforts to reform the health service. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the urgency of these improvements, noting the increasing patient demand and long waiting times. Recent surveys indicate declining satisfaction with NHS GP services, highlighting the need for enhanced primary care infrastructure to meet modern healthcare demands.
These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries, but for too long they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors treating more patients.
It is only because of the necessary decisions we took in the Budget that we are able to invest in GP surgeries, start tackling the 08:00 scramble and deliver better services for patients.
If we are serious about shifting care from hospital to community, from sickness to prevention, we need to invest in our primary care infrastructure.
