Maternity boss 'confident' as unit reopens
""We are really confident we have done what we need to do to really meet the standards we need," said Professor Deirdre Fowler, chief nurse and chief midwife at the trust."
"Amanda Ford, a registered nurse and midwife, stated, 'Yeovil was one of my first units I was asked to go and investigate some incidents. Within a month I just was appalled. One was a baby death. That's a death that shouldn't have occurred of a very healthy baby.'"
"Fowler emphasized, 'It's really important that we have strengthened governance and leadership and that we are able to recognise risk and respond really quickly.'"
Yeovil District Hospital's maternity services and Special Care Baby Unit closed in May 2025 due to safety concerns. The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has since recruited staff, improved facilities, and enhanced training. Chief nurse Professor Deirdre Fowler expressed confidence in meeting safety standards and acknowledged the anxiety of expectant parents. A former NHS inspector noted that the closure could have been avoided with proper attention to warnings. A mother shared her surprise at the unit's closure for safety reasons.
