Hundreds of Kaiser healthcare workers in Oakland and other Northern California locations staged a one-day strike beginning at 7 a.m. More than 600 mid-wives and nurse anesthetists participated to protest understaffing and burnout and to demand improved conditions for patient care. The walkout represents the first major labor action as the union negotiates its first contract with Kaiser. The upcoming contract will affect caregivers at more than 20 facilities, including Oakland. UNAC/UHCP represents around 40,000 healthcare professionals in California and Hawaii. Picketers planned marches at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center and were set to picket until 7 p.m.
