"I am really worried that patients who have treatable conditions are not going to be able to get into hospital and be treated because there are so many end-of-life patients in hospital beds."
"we are no longer putting patients on the waiting list for transfer who are just straightforward dying"
"Palliative and End of Life Care in Sussex"
End-of-life patients are increasingly occupying hospital beds across Sussex hospitals, reducing capacity for other patients and risking that people with treatable conditions will be unable to access hospital care this winter. Local hospices are struggling and finding placements for patients needing end-of-life care is becoming difficult, while community support after discharge is often uncertain. Transfers are now being prioritized for patients with complex needs, and straightforwardly dying patients are no longer being added to transfer waiting lists. Enhanced palliative care is being delivered in A&E corridors, creating operational dilemmas for hospital managers and intensifying winter pressures on bed availability.
