Senator Edward Markey introduced an amendment aimed at protecting 300 rural hospitals from proposed federal cuts, including DeSoto Regional Health Service in Louisiana. The Republican majority rejected this amendment, potentially jeopardizing essential healthcare for vulnerable communities. DeSoto's hospital, serving an 83% Black population in a small town, recently secured $36 million to modernize, banking on stable Medicaid funding. The urgent concern expressed by hospital CEO Todd Eppler highlights the broader implications of such policy decisions on both the hospital's financial health and local patients, many of whom rely on Medicaid for coverage.
I just hope that the people who are making these decisions have thought deeply about it and have some context of the real-world implications, he said, because it's going to affect us as a hospital and going to affect our patients.
Mansfield has less than 5,000 people and it is the parish seat of DeSoto County. It is 83 percent Black.
