DHSC eyes infrastructure overhaul amid 114 million IT spending boost
Briefly

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) is set to invest £114 million in IT infrastructure as part of an ongoing NHS restructuring in the UK. Findings from a Freedom of Information request show that while the IT budget for the 2024-2025 financial year will be £29.1 million—a decrease from the previous £37.7 million—staffing figures remain relatively stable at 38 IT employees. Industry expert Andy Ward emphasizes the necessity for strong cybersecurity measures to safeguard against vulnerabilities prevalent in healthcare IT, making it essential for patient safety.
"The Department for Health and Social Care's continued investment in IT infrastructure is a critical step in modernizing the UK's healthcare system, but cybersecurity resilience must be a top priority," said Andy Ward, international SVP at Absolute Security.
"Without it, healthcare organisations remain exposed to cyberattacks, data breaches, and operational disruption," Ward said, emphasizing the pressing need for enhanced cybersecurity in the health sector.
