Brooklyn Hospital Center nurses cry foul at denial of health care coverage
"Initially, when we got the notice that there was going to be a lapse in our healthcare coverage, what [Senior Vice President of Human Resources] Guy Mennonna informed us is that they basically had no money to continue payments. They had to make a choice between paying payroll or paying our benefits. And they chose to make payroll instead of paying the nursing benefits."
"This is how healthcare works. We protect ourselves in case of an emergency, for regular checkups. We show up for each other in New York. These health institutions have to do the same."
On March 17, nurses at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, represented by NYSNA, rallied in Downtown Brooklyn to protest the termination of their health insurance benefits effective January 31. While other hospital staff and management maintained their healthcare coverage, NYSNA nurses alone lost their benefits. The hospital cited financial constraints, claiming they had to choose between payroll and nursing benefits. The protest march began at the hospital's main entrance and proceeded to CEO Gary Terrinoni's residence at City Point. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso attended, emphasizing that healthcare institutions must provide the same protections to employees that they advocate for patients. Nurse educator Rehana Lowtan criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the decision.
