"He was the one that could get my brother to sit in the chair and check his teeth, said Katsura."
"And that was their dental appointment."
Aloha Pediatric Dentistry began in 1975 when Dr. Joseph Wampler opened a practice on Colby Street across from Alta Bates after dental rotations at Children's Hospital Oakland and Navy service. Wampler wore Hawaiian shirts and created a relaxed, Hawaii-themed environment to comfort children. Dr. Neil Katsura first encountered the practice as a UC Berkeley student when Wampler treated his autistic brother, later interning and becoming Wampler's partner in 1987. The practice emphasizes child-centered approaches such as comfort appointments where children meet staff, observe exams, then receive a sticker and toy. Aloha has served generations of Berkeley children for fifty years.
