He began contesting the shot put and discus throwing as a Paralympic athlete, representing Ireland, and hit headlines for another reason in 2015 when his carbon fibre blade was stolen from a vehicle at his home in Clones, Co Monaghan."

He completed the pull in minutes wearing a t-shirt and shorts in cold conditions. Crew and Aran Island Ferries staff supported him. His daughter Jessica (11) and fellow amputee Katie Walsh (7) watched; he presented Katie with a plaque. He dedicated the feat to fellow amputees and plans to attempt pulling a 300-tonne train. He has broken five Guinness records, represented Ireland in Paralympic shot put and discus, and underwent amputation in 2012 after many operations following a 2001 injury. He began pulling lorries in 2024.
