From the bubble to the booth? 49ers' voice Greg Papa hopeful of broadcasting last two games
"Confined to his Danville home in a protective bubble and with a dangerously low white blood cell count, Papa went back on the air remotely on Sept. 16 with co-host Greg Silver on the Papa and Silver show on KNBR from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. He grew a scraggly beard called his cancer beard because he couldn't shave (or use dental floss) for fear of a cut which could lead to bleeding and a lethal infection."
"Can Greg Papa go from the bubble to the booth? The Bay Area broadcast icon is hopeful of resuming his role as radio voice of the 49ers for the last two games of the regular season as he recovers from leukemia that was diagnosed in July, leaving him hospitalized for 23 days and in fear for his life. I was yellow. My eyes were yellow, my skin was yellow, Papa said in a phone interview Thursday."
Greg Papa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July and spent 23 days hospitalized, experiencing jaundice and rapid weight loss. He has undergone rounds of immunotherapy and two cycles of chemotherapy, and his labs have improved enough to consider limited activities. Papa remains confined to a protective bubble at home because of a low white blood cell count but returned to radio remotely on Sept. 16. He has resumed short drives to pick up medication, eaten at restaurants and attended a movie as tests permitted. Papa hopes to return to call the 49ers' final two regular-season games before a potential bone marrow transplant, pending hematologist approval.
