Billy Porter says he was 'dead for three days' in horror health battle
"When they got in there, there was so much puss, and bile, and infection behind the stone. It bubbled up and I went uroseptic in minutes. I was dead for three days. I am a miracle. I'm a walking miracle."
"According to the Sepsis Alliance, the term urosepsis describes sepsis caused by a UTI [urinary tract infection]. When a UTI goes untreated, it can spread to the kidneys and cause sepsis. Porter explained that his case of sepsis was so severe that he had to be placed on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine [ECMO machine], which is a form of life support."
Billy Porter, 56, revealed details of his life-threatening sepsis diagnosis from September. During a routine doctor's visit, a trapped kidney stone was discovered in his urethra. When doctors removed it, massive infection behind the stone caused him to develop urosepsis within minutes. The severity required placement on an ECMO machine, a form of life support that allows the heart and lungs to rest. Porter remained in a coma for three days, clinically dead, before awakening. Upon recovery, he discovered his leg had developed compartment syndrome, requiring surgical intervention. Porter describes his survival as miraculous.
