Eight babies have been born in the UK using a three-person genetic technique to prevent mitochondrial diseases. This method combines the egg and sperm from the parents with an additional egg from a donor. It has been legal for a decade and now has resulted in children born free from incurable mitochondrial diseases, which typically pass from mother to child. These conditions can severely debilitate and even threaten the lives of infants. Families have expressed immense gratitude for their new children, acknowledging the hope this advancement provides.
After years of uncertainty this treatment gave us hope - and then it gave us our baby. We look at them now, full of life and possibility, and we're overwhelmed with gratitude.
Thanks to this incredible advancement and the support we received, our little family is complete. The emotional burden of mitochondrial disease has been lifted, and in its place is hope, joy, and deep gratitude.
