"13 years later, we have two issues of Pencil Magazine, a hybrid text-image publication that includes drawings, comics, essays, poems, diagrams, and other experiments - all created with graphite pencils. Inspired by her teenage phase of drawing still lifes in graphite, the first issue of the mag took form of a tribute to that younger self. "Over time, the project has come to represent more than just graphite; it's a kind of resistance to the fragmented attention of digital media.""
"Setting itself apart from other magazines, Sasha and her team mostly reproduce work at 100 per cent scale, preserving the immediacy of the original. With distinctive handwritten text and the friction of writing in pencil, a tactile and intimate connection is created between the reader, writer and page. " I've come to believe that using pencils cultivates patience and strengthens attention. We're also fascinated by the creative possibilities that emerge when you impose tight constraints - like the small scale and graphite requirement,""
Sasha Wizansky co-founded Meatpaper in 2007 and later launched Pencil Magazine in 2012 as an experiment to make a magazine using only pencils and paper. Pencil Magazine has produced two issues over thirteen years and presents a hybrid of drawings, comics, essays, poems, diagrams, and experiments rendered exclusively in graphite. The publication reproduces work at 100% scale and uses handwritten pencil text to preserve immediacy and tactile intimacy. The project emphasizes patience, focused attention, and exploration of analog experiences while embracing tight creative constraints such as small scale and the exclusive use of graphite.
