Life is in constant motion in Chiara Xie's kinetic and flowing illustrations
"In illustrator Chiara Xie 's work, everything is in motion. Rooted in a deep reverence for vitality, Chiara is fascinated by "the rhythm that flows through a scene", lingering like a suspended breath, and other times "surging as a vibrant, agile current of motion". It's not hard to know what she means: every illustration is filled with motion, arcs of light and air bouncing off every corner."
""I use visual clues to weave these sensations together, so the art doesn't just show a movement, but invites the viewer to feel the life flowing within it," says Chiara. Growing up between China and Italy, "two cultures with deep histories and different vibes", the now Montreal-based illustrator cultivated an aesthetic of elegant motion, drawn to the drama and storytelling embedded within architectural shapes. Drawing from the latter, Italian futurism plays a strong role in shaping the rhythm, geometry and fluidity of human life."
Illustrations center on continuous motion and a reverence for vitality, using rhythms that linger like suspended breaths or surge as agile currents. Motion is expressed through arcs of light and air, geometry, and perspective so scenes feel alive and human figures move in tandem with their surroundings. The work draws from experiences between China and Italy, Italian futurism, and the influence of Yann Kebbi to inform drama, storytelling, and fluidity. A hybrid digital process begins in sketchbooks, then moves to Procreate and Photoshop, using grain-textured brushes for airy color and final rendering. Current focuses include sport, wellness, and travel.
